About the Agriculture Programme
While developed countries continue to subsidise their agricultural sectors heavily, dumping surplus production on third country markets whilst shielding politically sensitive sectors behind high tariff barriers, developing countries struggle to develop their export sectors, protect their vulnerable rural populations and overcome hunger and malnutrition. Environmental degradation associated with intensive production techniques characterises both rich and poor countries.
ICTSD’s programme on agricultural trade and sustainable development seeks to promote food security, equity and environmental sustainability in agricultural trade. It focuses specifically on four areas: farmers’ livelihoods; subsidy reform; tropical products and preference erosion; and work with others to foster a pro-poor, sustainability-oriented agricultural trade policy agenda.
